WORLD SAKE MONTH

Celebrate World Sake Day at Sticks’n’Sushi

All throughout October.

We’re celebrating World Sake Day all October long.

World Sake Day falls on 1 October. We’ve decided one day simply isn’t enough.

In Japan, there’s a simple tradition: you never pour sake for yourself. You pour for the person next to you. And they pour for you.

It’s a small gesture, but one that’s all about sharing and paying attention to the people around the table. Because sake isn’t only about what’s in the cup – it’s also about who you share it with.

We’re bringing that tradition to the table throughout October, with sake, sashimi and Japanese rituals made for sharing.

Sake & Sashimi

For World Sake Month, we’ve paired four of our sashimi dishes with sake, carefully chosen to complement one another.

  • Shake Sashimi

    Kizan Junmai Ginjo

  • Maguro Sashimi

    Sanka Junmai Daiginjo

  • Hiramasa Sashimi

    Timio Iwai Junmai Daiginjo

  • Sashimi Delux

    Shiro Junmai Ginjo

Choose one pairing. Or share a few around the table. And remember to pour for the person next to you. Otherwise, we’ll happily do the honours.

Choose your cup

Throughout October, our special sake tray will be making its way around the restaurant. Choose the cup you like best and a sake to go with your food. We’ll take care of the pouring.

A small Japanese ritual that’s not only about what’s in your cup, but who you share it with.

Choose your cup. We’ll pour.

Kagami Biraki

During World Sake Month, you’ll also spot small Kagami Biraki barrels in our restaurants.

Kagami Biraki is a Japanese ceremony where a barrel of sake is opened to mark something worth celebrating. Afterwards, its contents are shared.

Another ritual. Another good reason to gather around the table.

What is Sake?

Sake is a Japanese drink brewed from rice, water, yeast and koji. Although it’s often called rice wine, the brewing process actually has more in common with beer than winemaking.

The result is a wide variety of sake, from light and fresh to richer, fuller styles.

Sake can be enjoyed chilled, warm or hot and, above all, it’s very good with food. Sushi and sashimi are an excellent place to start – but certainly not where you have to stop.

New to sake? Ask us. We’ll happily help you find the right one for your food.

The story behind World Sake Day

In Japan, 1 October is known as Nihonshu no Hi – Sake Day. The date has its roots in traditional sake production. Autumn is rice harvest season and historically marked the beginning of a new sake-brewing season.

Today, the day is celebrated across Japan and in many other parts of the world – with sake in the cup and a focus on the traditions and craftsmanship behind it.

We’re not stopping at 1 October.

At Sticks ‘n’ Sushi, Sake Day lasts all October.
